FEATURE VALUE-ADDED DISTRIBUTION

or decades, the role of technology distributors was defined by efficiency. Success was measured by how quickly products could move from vendor warehouses to reseller shelves, how extensive a distribution network was, and how effectively inventory could be managed. Logistics, fulfilment and scale were the pillars on which distribution built its value proposition.
That model is rapidly giving way to something far more strategic.
The convergence of cloud computing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, subscription-based software and managed services has fundamentally altered the economics of the channel. Today, customers are buying outcomes rather than products, while partners are expected to deliver consulting, implementation, lifecycle management and ongoing customer success. As a result, distributors are evolving into cloud marketplace operators, technical advisors, service aggregators and business growth partners.
“ The traditional distribution model was built around moving products efficiently,” said Mostafa Kabel, CTO at Mindware Group.“ Today, success is measured by the ability to create business outcomes. Modern distributors are becoming technology advisors, solution aggregators, AI enablers and services providers that help vendors and partners accelerate adoption, reduce complexity and generate recurring revenue.” That evolution reflects a much broader transformation taking place across the channel.
From logistics to business outcomes Product fulfilment has not disappeared. It has simply become the starting point rather than the destination.
“ The measure of a great distributor was reach and reliability,” said Barb Huelskamp, Global Head of Channel at SolarWinds.“ That still matters, but it’ s no longer enough. Today’ s distributors are being asked to help partners navigate platform decisions, enable new go-to-market motions and make sense of an increasingly complex ecosystem. The logistics layer is becoming table stakes. The value-add layer is becoming the business.”
Sukhil Nair, President – UAE, Redington, believes logistics and fulfilment have become the baseline rather than the defining characteristic of distribution.
“ Reach, logistics and fulfilment remain fundamental, but today they’ re the foundation rather than the differentiator,” he said.“ What customers increasingly value is the ability to bring technologies, expertise and partners together to solve business challenges.”
Nair describes Redington as a technology ecosystem orchestrator that connects global technology vendors, channel partners, cloud platforms, software, financing and technical capabilities to help customers adopt technology with greater speed and confidence.
“ Today’ s distributors are growth enablers,” he said.“ We create opportunities for vendors to scale, for partners to expand their capabilities, and for customers to accelerate their digital transformation.”
Cybersecurity vendors are seeing the same shift.
